Sean Metzger is the Associate Dean for Faculty and Students in the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and, Television. He works on performance and visual culture (art, fashion, film, theater). He has authored two books: Chinese Looks: Fashion, Performance, Race (2014) and The Chinese Atlantic: Seascapes and the Theatricality of Globalization (2020). Professor Metzger has also co-edited several books including: Embodying Asian/American Sexualities, Futures of Chinese Cinema, and Awkward Stages: Plays about Growing Up Gay. He is the co-editor of Theatre Journal.
Before coming to UCLA, he taught for eight years at Duke University, where he held appointments in the English, Theater Studies, and Asian & Middle Eastern Studies departments. He also worked for three years with the LA Gay & Lesbian Center and as a consultant to various non-profit organizations. For shorter durations, he has worked on and off stage and as a consultant to major entertainment companies.
Professor Metzger has visited approximately 40 countries and has lived in Canada, France, and China. In 2014, he taught for the UC Education Abroad Program in Shanghai and, in 2008, he was a Fulbright scholar at Concordia University in Montreal. His current research involves travel to the Caribbean, Quebec, and South Africa. He was the president of Performance Studies international from 2016-2020.
