Although a majority of residents on the Hill have left the University for Winter Break, the Hill is alive and thriving to provide an enjoyable and safe experience for those who stay for Winter Break in Los Angeles. Check out Winter Break 2016 Information!

While you take a break from classes, please take note of important safety and security information on the Hill, planned outages and disruptions to operation in our residential communities, resources to utilize at this time, and exciting events and activities for you to take full advantage.

Important Dates

Last day of Fall Quarter finals

Safety and Security

UCLA BruinCard

Your BruinCard provides access to residential facilities and campus buildings. Please take extra precautions to ensure that you have your BruinCard on you at all times. The BruinCard Center, located at Kerckhoff Hall 123, will NOT be open during University Closure.

Resident Assistant (RA) and Resident Director (RD) on Duty

Select RAs will be present throughout Winter Break, providing duty coverage to ensure safety in your building, posting updates on changes throughout Break, and informing you of upcoming events and activities. A Resident Director will provide similar duty coverage throughout the Hill every night.

Front Desk Services

Residential Front Desks will be open 8am-5pm during the Winter Closure, but will be closed on 12/23-12/26 and 12/30-1/2. De Neve Front Desk has been relocated to Acacia 3rd floor lounge (12/10-1/5). To visit the De Neve Front Desk, use the podium 1st floor elevator and take it to the 3rd floor or use the Birch main entrance.

Beginning 1/6 at 8am, the front desks will return to their routine 24 hour service.

Please go to On Campus Housing Dispatch in Covel for any room or maintenance needs or emergency keys if the Front Desk is not open.

On Campus Housing (OCH) Dispatch is located at on the first floor of Covel Commons. This dispatch center provides immediate assistance in case of an emergency, as well as assists Winter Break residents with room access. OCH Dispatch is open 24 hours a day throughout Winter Break, including University Closure where it will assume Front Desk operations and services. For assistance, please visit Covel Commons or call OCH Dispatch at (310) 206-9633 (x69633).

Campus Safety

University Police (UCPD) will operate as usual. For emergency assistance, please call UCPD at (310) 825-1491 (x51491). For Community Service Officer (CSO) Escort Service to and from campus and the nearby area, please call (310) 794-WALK (x49255).

In addition to UCPD the Private Security Company Access will be doing rounds throughout the hill.


University Closure

In an effort to conserve energy, decrease costs to residents, and efficiently allocate resources between the Fall and Winter Quarters, the University enters a period of closure from Saturday, December 24, 2016 to Monday, January 9, 2017. Required personnel and services will stay open through this time (for example: On Campus Housing Dispatch, Maintenance, UCPD, etc.) to maintain physical plant and security measures.

Maintenance and Planned Outages

Residential facilities will undergo routine maintenance throughout Winter Break. Security within living quarters are ensured and will be enforced. Although construction will occur at this time, it will not affect residents living in any particular residential community. Heat will be available throughout Winter Break. Mail Center

The Mail Center will be open during the break. You will have access to your mail box and packages received will be distributed 9am-5pm Monday-Saturday and 12pm-3pm on Sundays. The Mail Center will be closed on Christmas 12/25 and New Year’s Day 1/1.

For residents staying through Winter Break, Rendezvous will be available for lunch (10am-1pm) and dinner (4pm-8pm) during the following dates:

ASUCLA Restaurants

ASUCLA restaurants will also be closed Friday, December 23 - Monday, January 2. You can click here for a list of the general restaurant hours and contact information.

If you have a smartphone, you can download the ASUCLA Benefits U app which will have updated holiday hours for all ASUCLA restaurants.

Westwood Restaurants

A number of recreation and athletic events will take place on campus and throughout Los Angeles. Except for Men’s Basketball games, all events are free with BruinCard. For a list of all sports events, please click here.

Free basketball game tickets will be available to winter staythough residents at the Winter Break Kickoff on Friday, December 9th 6-7pm in the Hitchen and for the rest of the break at On Campus Housing Dispatch at Covel.

Volunteer Opportunities

Local Transportation

Although campus transportation and shuttle services will be reduced at this time, local Los Angeles mass transportation can take students to and from campus, at Ackerman Turnaround at Westwood Plaza and at Hilgard Avenue.

Bus tokens will be available for stay through students at On Campus Housing Dispatch in Covel.

Santa Monica Big Blue Bus and Culver City Green Bus will operate to and from campus. Student fares cost $0.50 with a BruinCard swipe.

Additionally, Los Angeles Metro Transit provides distance travel routes throughout Los Angeles. Check sites for routes and service changes. For all transportation questions, Google Maps provides updated information with numerous modes of transportation.
