Amjad was born and raised in Rafsanjan, a small agricultural town in southeastern Iran known for its pistachio orchards. He moved to Tehran for his undergraduate studies before relocating to the US. Amjad earned his PhD in Genetics from USC, followed by postdoctoral research at Caltech. He is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology at UCLA. His lab integrates synthetic biology and computational modeling to understand how complex multicellular structures emerge from simple rules. He also teaches a course that emphasizes quantitative reasoning and computational literacy for undergraduate life sciences students.
