Masters of Student Affairs (MSA) Graduate Resident Director

The Graduate Resident Director (GRD) plays a crucial role in fostering a vibrant and inclusive residential community within UCLA Residential Life. This position offers a unique opportunity for UCLA graduate students who are enrolled in the M.Ed Student Affairs program to gain valuable hands-on experience in residence life supporting the 14,000+ students living within university housing.

UCLA Masters of Student Affairs (MSA) Graduate Resident Directors (GRD) are live-in, part-time professional staff and share the responsibility for the general programmatic vision of a building community consisting of 1,000+ residents.

MSA GRDs will gain the following skill sets and experiences from their role:

  • Co-supervise and support Resident Assistants through weekly staff meetings, regular two-on-one meetings, continuous training and feedback, performance evaluations, etc.
  • Serve on a leadership team to build community, manage team dynamics, and coordinate meetings for the student staff team.
  • Meet individually with undergraduate students as needed for housing, personal, or academic concerns. Adjudicate student conduct cases and assign appropriate developmental sanctions.
  • Assist Residential Life department with residential openings and closings, events, and procedures including, but not limited to, Student Staff training, True Bruin Welcome, RA Recruitment & Selection, and Student Affairs events.
  • Participate in crisis response on-duty rotation approximately 3 times/quarter.
  • Ongoing training and professional development provided by Residential Life leadership to enhance leadership, interpersonal, programmatic, and administrative skills

Qualifications

Acceptance to UCLA’s Masters of Student Affairs Program (M.Ed.) isrequired.

We’re looking for competitive candidates who will bring a passion for working with students, a strong commitment to student development, and an excitement for fostering an inclusive community within UCLA’s residential life. Qualified candidates will have:

  • Previous experience in residence life, student affairs, community development, or counseling (preferred).
  • Experience with program development and event & activity planning alongside knowledge of student learning, student development, and identity development theories.
  • Commitment and willingness to engage in complex diversity issues and social justice educational strategies.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse undergraduate student population.
  • Experience in mentoring and/or supervising student staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and a commitment to student success and well-being.
  • Demonstrated openness to constructive feedback and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and students.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage a rigorous administrative workload.
  • Advanced supervisory skills, demonstrated leadership and management of day-to-day residence hall operations, successful community-building strategies, conflict mediation skills, extremely strong interpersonal skills, and sound decision-making and evaluative skills.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overnight, and weekends, as required.

Continued employment is contingent upon completing a satisfactory background investigation and enrollment in the graduate program.

Compensation and Benefits

Part-Time GRD (MSA)

  • Part-time, 20 hours/week from August 1 to June 30.
  • Compensation includes a furnished single room with utilities and internet, a 19 meals-per-week meal plan provided when UCLA Dining is operational, and a biweekly stipend.
  • Departmental-issued work cell phone.
  • $1,200 in professional development funding.
